The average person can walk at about 30 ft/sec, so this should give you an idea of what values are being looked for when measuring velocity (how much water passes by within one minute).

It’s important to note that different units get used for measurement – cubic meters per second, kilometers per liter, or millimeters per year. They all represent the same thing; they’re not very common outside their respective regions.

Stream velocity and depth can vary significantly depending on how that stream is measured. Like rivers and coastlines, streams increase the amount of friction you’re going to encounter when measuring velocity. When measuring water flow, make sure to do so at various points along the stream. Doing so will ensure data is not skewed and will provide a more accurate reading. Plants or rocks should never get used as measurement locations.

Calculating Stream Gauge Readings

After measuring various parts of your stream, you should have all data necessary for calculations. To calculate the discharge of each section of your stream, multiply the width and height by the velocity.
